To the public, she became closely associated with the Midtown Manhattan restaurant, but to her children and loved ones, she was simply Mom.
Scotto was a proud mother of four children, a loving grandmother of eight and a joyful great-grandmother. Her family said her greatest happiness came not from what she accomplished professionally, but from watching her family grow and celebrating the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
More than 30 years ago, Scotto demonstrated the courage and determination that would define her life when she pursued the opportunity to open a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan. Despite friends and family members urging her to reconsider, she believed in the dream and mortgaged the Brooklyn home where she and her husband had raised their family to make the venture possible.
That leap of faith became Fresco by Scotto, a restaurant that went on to welcome presidents, world leaders, celebrities, royalty, neighbors and friends. Yet her family said Scotto never measured the restaurant’s success by the prominence of the people who entered its doors. Instead, she believed in treating every guest as though they were entering her own home, making sure they felt cared for and well fed.
More than three decades later, Fresco by Scotto continues to reflect the values Scotto brought to the business. Her family described those values as generosity, resilience, hospitality and love, principles that helped shape the restaurant and the way she approached both her work and her relationships.
Beyond the restaurant, Scotto’s greatest legacy was the family she devoted herself to. In their tribute, her family reflected on the lasting place she will hold in their hearts, writing, “Your table will always be set in our hearts.” The message was signed by Rosanna, John and Elaina and their family, who also shared a lighthearted hope that Scotto would be welcomed by her husband with Frank Sinatra music — or perhaps even Frank Sinatra himself.
