Sam Keegan Obituary, UPPER HUTT, New Zealand — Sam Keegan, a much-loved and admired Year 10 Dean, Geography and Social Studies teacher at Upper Hutt College, has died after battling cancer for five years. The school shared the news with sadness, saying Keegan passed away the previous night.
Throughout his five-year battle with cancer, Keegan continued to show his dedication to teaching and his students. According to the school, he continued showing up to teach through treatments, surgeries and the many challenges that came with his illness.
Keegan was deeply passionate about education, particularly Geography and Social Studies. He enjoyed sharing that enthusiasm with his classes and was also committed to his role as a Dean, supporting students when they needed guidance while maintaining the good humour and directness that those around him came to know.
His connection with Upper Hutt College extended beyond the classroom. The school remembered the many connections, laughs and enjoyable moments he shared with students and staff, describing him as positive, energetic, good-humoured and genuine. His influence was felt by many members of the school community.
Outside of teaching, Keegan had a range of interests and passions. He loved travelling and recently completed a trip to Southeast Asia, during which he unexpectedly appeared on Japanese television while visiting Tokyo. He was also passionate about CrossFit and worked hard to represent New Zealand at the Torian Pro Competition in Australia in 2024.
Keegan also enjoyed gaming and had a particular love for animals, especially his dog, Jeffrey. These interests were among the many things that reflected the personality and life he shared with those around him.
The school also remembered words Keegan shared with seniors at the 2024 Leavers Dinner: “Life is full of wins and lessons – wins are nice, but lessons make you who you are.” His message, like his commitment to his students and colleagues, will remain part of the memories he leaves behind.
Keegan is survived by his wife, Bex, along with his family and the many students, colleagues and friends who knew and loved him. Upper Hutt College has extended its deepest condolences, thoughts and aroha to his loved ones and everyone affected by his passing. Moe mai rā, Sam.
