Tony Reno Obituary: New Haven, Connecticut – Former Yale Football Coach Dies at 52 After Illness

Tony Reno Obituary, NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Tony Reno, the longtime Yale football head coach who guided the Bulldogs for 14 seasons and won five Ivy League championships, has died at the age of 52 following an illness, the university announced.

Reno stepped down as Yale’s head football coach in February after the 2025 season, citing health concerns. Yale has not publicly disclosed the specific illness or cause of his death. His passing came months after he left the program he had led for more than a decade.

During his tenure, Reno compiled 83 victories, the second-most wins by a head coach in Yale football history. He also led the Bulldogs to five Ivy League championships, establishing a lasting record of success during his time on the Yale sideline.

Reno’s teams were particularly successful against Yale’s historic rival, Harvard. He finished with a 7-2 record against Harvard over his final nine meetings with the Crimson, adding another significant chapter to his coaching legacy.

In his final season, Reno guided Yale to the Ivy League’s first FCS playoff appearance and the first postseason victory in school history. His accomplishments helped elevate the Yale program while giving generations of players an opportunity to compete at a high level.

Reno’s connection to Yale football was also deeply personal. His son, Dante Reno, was the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback during the 2026 season before suffering an elbow injury in the season opener. Following Tony Reno’s death, Dante played in Yale’s 41-24 home-opening victory over Merrimack and later said he could feel his father’s presence throughout the Yale Bowl.

Tributes from former players, friends and members of the football community reflected on Reno’s influence as a coach and mentor. Former players described his leadership, competitive spirit and commitment to developing young athletes, while friends remembered the personal relationships he maintained throughout his life and coaching career.

Tony Reno’s death marks the loss of a significant figure in Yale football history. His five Ivy League championships, 83 victories and contributions to the development of Yale players will remain part of the program’s legacy. Condolences go to his family, friends, former players and the wider Yale football community as they mourn his passing.
