LAYTON, Utah — A significant power outage affected portions of Layton on Tuesday afternoon after an equipment failure involving a transformer caused circuit breakers to trip across nearby substations, disrupting electrical service and traffic signals in parts of the city.
The outage was reported at approximately 2:15 p.m. MST near Main Street and Antelope Drive. Initial information indicated that localized distribution infrastructure was damaged, with a subterranean transformer failure contributing to the loss of power across an estimated 5,400 active customer accounts.
The disruption affected areas around Main Street, Antelope Drive, Hill Field Road and Gentile Street. With several overhead traffic signals losing power, public safety officers were deployed to major intersections to help manage traffic and congestion, including areas near the Interstate 15 corridor.
The Layton Fire Department and Davis County Sheriff’s Office responded following multiple emergency signals associated with the outage. Emergency personnel also assisted people who were temporarily stranded in commercial elevators near the Layton Hills Mall area. Authorities reported that no injuries or severe structural fires were connected to the initial equipment failure.
Rocky Mountain Power crews began working to isolate the damaged equipment and assess the affected electrical circuits. Utility technicians prioritized critical infrastructure, including healthcare facilities, water treatment operations and public safety facilities, while backup generators were maintained where needed.
Restoration efforts included emergency rerouting through adjacent circuits, repairs to damaged transformer equipment and testing of high-voltage lines before circuits could safely be re-energized. Utility crews also worked on replacing transformer units and degraded overhead conductors as part of efforts to stabilize the affected distribution system.
The outage also disrupted businesses along Hill Field Road, where some retail stores and restaurants temporarily lost electrical service and digital point-of-sale systems. Traffic officials advised motorists to consider alternate routes, including Highway 89 and Adams Avenue, while crews continued working around affected intersections and Interstate 15 access points.
As repair and testing operations continue, residents and motorists in affected areas are urged to exercise caution around utility crews, damaged electrical infrastructure and intersections where traffic signals may remain out of service. The latest available information indicates that utility teams remain focused on completing repairs and restoring stable electrical service to all remaining affected customers.
