Curry died at his home in Los Angeles on August 25, 2026, according to reports citing his longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz.

Curry built a remarkable career across film, television and theater, becoming one of the most distinctive performers of his generation. Born in Cheshire, England, in 1946, he began his professional career on the stage before gaining international recognition through his work in London’s West End and later on Broadway.

His breakthrough came with the stage production and 1975 film adaptation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, in which he played the flamboyant Dr. Frank-N-Furter. The role transformed Curry into a cult icon and helped make the musical one of the most enduring cult films in popular culture.

Curry’s career extended far beyond Rocky Horror. He appeared in films including Clue, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Legend, Annie and Muppet Treasure Island. He also became widely recognized for playing Pennywise the clown in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It, adding another memorable character to his extensive body of work.

On stage, Curry earned three Tony Award nominations for performances in productions including Amadeus, My Favorite Year and Monty Python’s Spamalot. His work also extended into voice acting, where his distinctive voice brought numerous animated characters to life. He received a Daytime Emmy for his voice work on Peter Pan & the Pirates.

Curry suffered a major stroke in 2012 that affected his mobility, but he continued contributing to entertainment through voice work and occasional appearances. He remained connected with Rocky Horror fans and participated in events celebrating the film’s 50th anniversary in 2025. His memoir, Vagabond, was also published in 2025.
