Robert Melville Lee Obituary, SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Robert Melville Lee, the former NFL quarterback and punter who enjoyed a 12-season professional football career, passed away on August 16 at the age of 80.
Born on August 7, 1946, in Columbus, Ohio, Lee developed a passion for football that would shape much of his life. He attended Lowell High School in San Francisco before continuing his football career at Arizona State, City College of San Francisco, and the University of the Pacific.
Lee entered the NFL in 1968 after being selected by the Minnesota Vikings as the 441st overall pick. Over the course of his professional career, he played for the Vikings, Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams, contributing as both a quarterback and punter. His ability to perform in multiple roles made him a distinctive figure throughout his time in professional football.
During his career, Lee was part of the Vikings’ 1969 NFL Championship team and appeared in three Super Bowls. He also produced memorable postseason performances, including throwing a touchdown pass in Super Bowl XI. His career included a notable playoff victory over the Los Angeles Rams in 1977, played in difficult, muddy conditions.
Lee’s 1973 season with the Atlanta Falcons stood among the highlights of his career. After replacing Dick Shiner as the team’s starting quarterback in Week 5, Lee led Atlanta to seven consecutive victories. He started 10 games that season, passing for 1,786 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions, helping the Falcons achieve what was then the best record in franchise history.
His career was also marked by an unusual statistical distinction, as he became one of the few quarterbacks to record both a perfect passer rating and a zero passer rating during the same season. Beyond his statistics and accomplishments, Lee was remembered for his versatility, resilience and ability to contribute when his teams needed him most.
Lee’s football legacy continued through his family. His son, Zac, followed him into the quarterback position at the University of Nebraska and later played professional football. His daughter, Jenna, established a career in journalism with Fox Business and Fox News. The family also became the first father-son duo inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame, recognizing their contributions to athletics and the community.
