Wills Point Fire Today — The Corky Fire in Van Zandt County near Wills Point and Myrtle Springs has grown to approximately 300 acres and was reported to be 10% contained as firefighters continued battling the active wildfire.
According to updates attributed to the Texas A&M Forest Service, the fire had expanded from an earlier estimate of 75 acres at 0% containment to 150 acres at 5% containment before reaching 300 acres and 10% containment in the latest update provided.
The fire is burning near VZCR 3406 and State Highway 64, with the Myrtle Springs Volunteer Fire Department reporting that the fast-moving grass fire pushed west toward VZCR 3416. Heavy smoke was also reported to be affecting nearby county roads.
State Highway 64 was closed near Wills Point as emergency crews worked to contain the fire. Earlier updates advised motorists traveling toward Myrtle Springs or Canton to avoid the affected portion of the highway and use an alternate route. There was no reported threat to Terrell at the time of the available update.
Multiple fire agencies and forestry personnel were reported to be working at the scene, including Myrtle Springs Fire Department, Wills Point Fire Department, Elmo Fire Department, Terrell Fire Department and the Texas A&M Forest Service. The crews continued operations under extremely hot conditions as they worked to slow the fire’s spread and increase containment.
A resident in the affected area reported that the horses on their property were safe and expressed appreciation for firefighters and neighbors who offered assistance. The resident also said they had been told that six homes on their road had burned, but specifically noted that the information could not be officially confirmed.
Earlier estimates and reports circulating online, including claims about the fire’s acreage and aircraft being requested, had not been independently confirmed at the time of the updates. The latest reported figure from the Texas A&M Forest Service placed the fire at 300 acres and 10% contained.
