Brent Berry Obituary, CALIFORNIA — Brent Berry, a former Canadian Football League defensive end and accomplished athlete, passed away on September 23 at the age of 85.
Berry was born on December 14, 1940, at Bremerton Naval Hospital in Washington. He was raised primarily in Cupertino, California, and attended Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, where he distinguished himself in both football and wrestling.
After graduating from high school, Berry joined the United States Army. He served at Fort Benning, Georgia, and later in Munich, Germany. During his military service, his athletic abilities earned him a place on the Army wrestling team.
Berry went on to capture the European Heavyweight Wrestling Championship while serving in the Army. The achievement reflected the athletic ability and dedication that would continue to define his sporting career.
After completing his military service, Berry attended Foothill Junior College, where he became a standout football tackle. He later transferred to San José State College, continuing to play football while earning a degree in physical education.
His football career eventually led to his selection by the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL Draft. He was also red-shirted by the Oakland Raiders. Rather than continue pursuing the NFL, Berry chose to play professional football in Canada, joining the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. His CFL career, however, was cut short by an injury.
After returning to California, Berry developed a passion for rugby and joined the Peninsula Ramblers as a forward. Through the sport, he found camaraderie and lasting friendships with players from around the world.
Berry’s life was marked by achievements in football, wrestling, military service and rugby. He is remembered for his athletic accomplishments and the friendships he built throughout his life. Condolences are extended to his family, friends and all who knew him. May Brent Berry rest in peace.
