Gerell L. Reed Obituary, ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands Shooting Update — A 21-year-old man was fatally shot early Thursday morning, August 27, 2026, after a vehicle crashed into a wall along Judy M. Gomez Highway, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department.
The victim was identified as Gerell L. Reed, 21, by his next of kin, police said. His death brings the reported homicide total in the U.S. Virgin Islands to 33 in 2026, including 15 homicides recorded on St. Thomas.
The incident began at approximately 2:49 a.m. Thursday when the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system alerted emergency dispatchers to reports of multiple gunshots along Judy M. Gomez Highway. Shortly afterward, 911 received a separate report of a vehicle that had crashed into a wall in the area.
According to VIPD Director of Communications Glen Dratte, a concerned citizen contacted Central Dispatch and reported the crashed vehicle, stating that an unresponsive man was inside. Officers responded to the scene and found Reed inside the vehicle, unresponsive and appearing to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel examined Reed and determined that he had no signs of life. His identity was later confirmed by his next of kin, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department.
Authorities have not released additional information about Reed’s background or the events that preceded the shooting. Police had not identified a suspect as of the latest update, and no suspect name, age or address has been released.
Investigators are working to determine what led to the shooting, how the vehicle became involved and whether the crash occurred during or immediately after the shooting. The investigation remains active as detectives work to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding Reed’s death.
