Jason Kaplan Obituary, JANESVILLE, Wis. — Jason Kaplan, 25, died after suffering gunshot wounds in a fatal shooting reported shortly after midnight on August 9, 2026, in the 100 block of South Academy Street in Janesville, Wisconsin.
According to authorities, police received multiple emergency calls concerning a disturbance involving several people. Gunfire was reportedly heard before officers arrived at the location. When police reached the scene, they found Kaplan and two other people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders provided assistance before the three victims were transported for medical treatment. Kaplan later died from injuries sustained in the shooting, while the other two victims were reported to have suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Investigators indicated that the people involved were believed to have known one another and that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident rather than a random attack. Detectives have continued working to establish the sequence of events and determine the circumstances that led to the gunfire.
The investigation resulted in several arrests. Among those taken into custody was 21-year-old Marshaun Jones, who was arrested in Monroe on August 10 following a search warrant. He faces charges connected to the fatal shooting, including first-degree intentional homicide and offenses involving attempted homicide and reckless endangerment.
Authorities also identified Mantezz Granger, Charles Crenshaw III, Demetrius Cooper and Tyshawn Howe among those arrested in connection with the case. Reported charges include homicide, attempted homicide and reckless-endangerment-related offenses.
Witnesses reportedly described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a gray SUV leave the area following the disturbance. Detectives remain focused on determining what happened before the shooting and the specific roles of those allegedly involved.
Kaplan’s death has left the Janesville community facing the loss of a 25-year-old resident following the fatal incident. As the investigation and related criminal proceedings continue, his memory remains connected to the circumstances surrounding the August 9 shooting. The charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
