Matthew Michael Morey Obituary, ALBANY, Ind. — Matthew Michael Morey, of Albany, Indiana, died at the age of 19 after entering the swollen Mississinewa River during severe flooding in Delaware County. Morey was among at least seven people whose deaths have been connected to storms and flooding that affected Indiana.
Morey was born in Muncie, Indiana, on July 20, 2007, to Kelly and Angela “Angie” Morey. His obituary describes him as a fun-loving, witty, smart and genuinely funny young man whose personality brought joy to those around him.
Morey was a recent graduate of Delta High School, where he was known as a standout wide receiver on the football team. He was preparing to begin a new chapter at Purdue University, where he planned to study engineering.
On Wednesday, August 12, Morey was with a group of friends near an iron bridge in the area of County Road 450 and Gregory Road when four teenagers entered the flooded Mississinewa River. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office received a call shortly after 8:30 p.m. and deputies began searching the waterway.
Three of the teenagers were located and rescued, while Morey remained missing. Search efforts continued past midnight before being suspended, with additional multi-agency efforts continuing in the days that followed as crews searched the river and surrounding areas.
On Saturday, August 15, Morey was found in the Mississinewa River and respectfully recovered. His death came as communities across Indiana continued dealing with severe flooding and the loss of other lives connected to the storms.
The loss has also affected the wider Delta community. The Delta Baseball Boosters postponed the 4th Annual Corey Roach Memorial Golf Outing, originally scheduled for August 23, citing the difficult week and the loss of the recent Delta graduate. The event was rescheduled for October 25.
Matthew Morey’s death has left his family, friends, former classmates and community mourning a young man remembered for his personality, athletic ability and plans for the future. As those who knew him remember his life and legacy, condolences remain with the Morey family and everyone affected by his passing.
