Sulema Ovalle-Pacaya and Erasmo Matias Obituary, BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Two people were killed early Sunday morning following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 in Birmingham, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
The victims were identified as 24-year-old Erasmo David Matias of Birmingham and 29-year-old Sulema Marisol Ovalle-Pacaya of Bessemer. Both were traveling in a Honda Civic when the vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 4:39 a.m. Sunday in the southbound lanes of I-65 near the Green Springs exit. Emergency responders were called to the scene following the collision involving the two vehicles.
According to authorities, both Matias and Ovalle-Pacaya suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Despite the emergency response, both occupants of the Honda Civic were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. Authorities have not released information regarding what caused the two vehicles to collide or provided additional details about the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
