Darrel Gray Jr. And Eleanor “Nora” Gray Obituary, Ava, N.Y. Accident Update — Darrel Gray Jr., 52, of West Leyden, and his 17-year-old passenger, Eleanor “Nora” Gray, were killed Thursday morning in a head-on collision involving a Volkswagen Tiguan and a Mack tractor-trailer in the Town of Ava, authorities said.
According to investigators, Gray was driving a 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan eastbound when the vehicle crossed the center line and entered the westbound lane. The SUV then collided head-on with a Mack tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction.
The collision caused fatal injuries to both occupants of the Volkswagen. Darrel Gray Jr. and Eleanor Gray were pronounced dead at the scene despite the response of emergency crews.
The Mack tractor-trailer was being driven by 46-year-old Erik Rowland of Woodgate. Rowland was injured in the crash and was airlifted to SUNY Upstate Medical Center for treatment. His injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.
The crash prompted a significant emergency response as crews worked to assist those involved, secure the scene and begin the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
Darrel Gray Jr. and Eleanor Gray were both members of the Adirondack Central School District community. Their deaths have left students, families, staff and friends mourning the loss of the father and teenage passenger.
Investigators continue to examine why the Volkswagen crossed the center line and entered the path of the oncoming tractor-trailer. Authorities have not released additional information explaining what caused the lane departure.
