According to the San Diego Police Department, investigators entered Haden’s office out of what authorities described as “an abundance of caution” and discovered him deceased inside the building. Haden was a native of San Diego and a graduate of University City High School. He joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2010 and went on to serve as acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California in 2023 and again in 2025, establishing a career marked by federal leadership and public service.

During his years with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Haden oversaw significant prosecutions involving violent crime, human trafficking, public corruption, firearms trafficking and child exploitation. His colleagues recognized him for his professionalism, legal expertise and commitment to protecting communities throughout the region.

Before entering federal service, Haden graduated from Stanford University and served for five years as a U.S. Navy officer. Beyond his work in federal court, Haden was involved in community service, youth athletics, mentoring programs and legal education initiatives. His contributions extended beyond his official duties, reflecting a commitment to supporting young people and strengthening the broader San Diego community.

U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon described Haden’s death as “one of the darkest days in our office’s history,” remembering him as “a beacon of light” whose life was defined by laughter, friendship, integrity and a commitment to serving others. His statement reflected the deep sense of loss among colleagues who worked alongside Haden during his federal career.

As the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office works to establish the official cause and manner of death, Haden is being remembered for his distinguished legal career, leadership and service to others.
