Charles W. Walker Obituary, AUGUSTA, Ga. — Former Georgia state Sen. Charles W. Walker has died at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy of public service, economic development and community leadership in Augusta-Richmond County and across Georgia.
Walker is being remembered by friends, colleagues and community members who described him as a dedicated public servant and a person who supported and encouraged others throughout his life. One longtime friend recalled working alongside Walker for 25 to 30 years and described him as a great friend who will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
Walker made history during his political career when he became the first African American to be elected as majority leader of the Georgia General Assembly State Senate. His work in Augusta-Richmond County and throughout Georgia made a lasting impact on the communities he served.
Among the contributions highlighted in tributes to Walker was his role in generating more than $20 million in economic development for the Medical College of Georgia Cancer Center. He was also recognized for his efforts supporting the revitalization of the historic Laney Walker business district and for his support of educational enrichment programs for young people in the community.
During his illness, Walker received the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World Georgia State Association’s 100 Years Centennial Convention “Honorable John Lewis” Civil Liberties Centennial Award. The honor was accepted on his behalf by his son, Dr. Charles “Champ” Walker Jr., at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Augusta.
In his acceptance message for his father, Dr. Walker said the historic recognition, named in honor of the late Georgia Congressman John Lewis, would resonate with his father, his family and citizens throughout Georgia and the Augusta-Richmond County community. The award recognized Walker’s contributions to the state and local community, including his economic development efforts and support for education.
Friends also remembered Walker for his willingness to support and elevate others. One tribute recalled his favorite phrase, “Make a decision,” describing his encouragement to others to take the lead and not be afraid to make important calls. His support of people in their careers and personal endeavors was cited as one of the qualities that made his friendship meaningful to many.
Walker was also remembered with pride for sharing his book with actor Danny Glover and discussing his lifelong journey.
