Ahmed Osman and Hannah Jorgensen Obituary, CORALVILLE, Iowa — The Iowa City Community School District is mourning the loss of Hannah Jorgensen, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary School, and Ahmed Osman, a 10-year-old fifth-grade student, following a tragic incident during a school field trip this week.

According to authorities, the incident occurred Tuesday at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area, approximately eight and a half miles north of Iowa City. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the area around noon after receiving reports of two individuals in the water near the Coralville Reservoir spillway.

An extensive emergency response was launched as crews searched the reservoir. Authorities later confirmed that Jorgensen, 24, and Ahmed, 10, were the two victims. Jorgensen’s body was recovered Tuesday, while Ahmed’s body was located the following day.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the tragedy as the investigation continues.

Jorgensen was a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary and was remembered within the school community as a dedicated educator who cared deeply about helping young people learn and grow. Her death has been felt by colleagues, students, and families across the Iowa City Community School District.

Ahmed, a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary, was also remembered as a valued member of the school community. His death has left classmates, friends, teachers, and family members grieving the loss of a young life.

In a statement, the Iowa City Community School District expressed its sorrow, saying, “Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district.” The district extended its condolences to their families and loved ones, as well as Jorgensen’s colleagues and students and Ahmed’s classmates and friends.

The district also announced that counseling and support services would be made available to students, staff, and families affected by the tragedy. As the investigation continues, the Coralville and Iowa City communities are remembering Jorgensen and Ahmed and offering support to those closest to them. Their lives and their place within the Borlaug Elementary community will be remembered by the many people who knew and cared for them.
