Andy Schmidt Obituary, RUSSELL COUNTY, Ky. — Andy Schmidt, 42, of Lexington, Kentucky, has died following a reported drowning at Lake Cumberland, according to Russell County Coroner Mark Coots.
Schmidt was identified as the victim after authorities responded to a report of a possible drowning in the eastern portion of Russell County near Lake Cumberland Marina, formerly known as Alligator Dock No. 1.
According to Coroner Coots, Schmidt had been camping with friends at Wolf Creek Landing, located across the lake from Lake Cumberland Marina. Schmidt and a friend were reportedly swimming when Schmidt began experiencing difficulty in the water.
Witnesses reported that Schmidt struggled in the water before going beneath the surface and failing to resurface. A search and recovery operation was subsequently launched in the area as authorities worked to locate him.
Recovery efforts resumed Sunday morning, with members of Russell County Search & Rescue and officers with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife participating in the operation. At approximately 9:40 a.m., authorities confirmed that a body had been recovered from the waters of Lake Cumberland near the marina.
The Russell County Coroner responded to the scene following the recovery. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding Schmidt’s drowning, and the incident remains under investigation.
