Brett Michael Whitney Obituary, GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. — Brett Michael Whitney, 37, of Greenville, South Carolina, died early Wednesday morning, September 2, after being struck by multiple vehicles while crossing South Pleasantburg Drive (SC 291) near Impact Drive.
According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, Whitney died from blunt force injuries sustained in the crash. His manner of death was ruled accidental.
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 4:40 a.m. near the intersection of South Pleasantburg Drive and Impact Drive. Authorities had received reports of a pedestrian being struck shortly after 4:30 a.m., prompting first responders to the scene.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said a 2015 Ford van towing a utility vehicle was traveling southbound on SC 291 when it struck Whitney as he was crossing the roadway. Whitney was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said a second vehicle, described as an unknown pickup truck, subsequently struck Whitney before leaving the area. The incident was initially described by the coroner’s office as a possible pedestrian hit-and-run crash.
Authorities later announced that the driver of the second vehicle had been located. No charges had been filed against that driver as of the latest update, and investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding both vehicle strikes.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol remain involved in the investigation. Authorities have not released additional details regarding why Whitney was crossing the roadway or the circumstances surrounding the second vehicle’s departure.
