Corie Walsh Obituary: Frankfort, Illinois – Mother Pleads Not Guilty in Death of 2-Year-Old Son Barrett “Bear” Walsh

Corie Walsh Obituary, FRANKFORT, Ill. — Corie Walsh, 40, pleaded not guilty Thursday, September 24, to three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son, Barrett Mark Walsh, known as “Bear,” at the family’s Frankfort home.

The case began September 1, when Frankfort police responded to the family’s residence in the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court following a report involving an unresponsive child. According to prosecutors and court documents, a neighbor discovered Barrett in the basement and began performing CPR before the child was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A preliminary autopsy finding identified Barrett’s cause of death as asphyxia caused by ligature compression of the neck. The finding remains part of the evidence in the criminal case as prosecutors and defense attorneys continue addressing the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

Walsh was also found inside the home after apparently attempting to harm herself and was transported for medical treatment. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening, and her three other children were not physically injured in the incident.

Prosecutors allege that Walsh told investigators she killed Barrett because she believed he was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” Investigators also learned that Walsh had been closely following the highly publicized Lindsay Clancy murder case and had discussed that case with friends through group messages shortly before Barrett was found.

Walsh’s attorney, Andrea Lyon, has argued that her client was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and a psychotic episode at the time of Barrett’s death. The defense is seeking appropriate psychiatric treatment, including a possible transfer to a mental health facility. The claim regarding Walsh’s mental state is part of the defense’s position and has not been established as a court finding.

Walsh remains detained as the criminal proceedings continue. Prosecutors and defense attorneys are expected to address her mental state, the circumstances surrounding Barrett’s death and the evidence supporting the first-degree murder charges as the case moves forward.

Walsh’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 26. Barrett’s death has left the family and community confronting the loss of a young child as the legal process continues. The case remains pending, and the charges against Walsh are allegations unless and until established in court.
