Idris Evans Obituary: Edgewood, Pennsylvania – UPMC Children’s Physician Dies After Stabbing

Idris Evans Obituary, EDGEWOOD, Pa. — Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, died Thursday, September 24, 2026, after he was stabbed during an early-morning incident at a home in Edgewood, Pennsylvania. He was 46.

Allegheny County police said officers were called to a home in the 100 block of Linden Avenue shortly after 12:30 a.m. after authorities received a report of a stabbing. Responding officers found Evans and an adult woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. Both victims were taken to area hospitals in critical condition, but Evans later died from his injuries. The woman remained in critical condition, according to authorities.

Police later identified 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway of Pittsburgh as the suspect. Authorities said investigators determined that Hemingway entered the home and attacked the victims while they were sleeping. A K9 unit subsequently located him behind a nearby home, where he was detained and taken to a hospital for treatment of lacerations to his hand. He has been charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass.

Beyond the circumstances of his death, Evans was known for his work caring for critically ill children. UPMC identifies him as the medical director of its Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team and an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He was board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine.

His professional interests included pediatric sepsis, critical care transport and electronic health record analysis. Evans completed his medical education at Drexel University College of Medicine, followed by pediatric residency and fellowship training in pediatric critical care medicine at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. His academic work also included research and publications in pediatric critical care.

The UPMC and University of Pittsburgh communities expressed deep sorrow over Evans’ death. In a statement, UPMC described him as a “dedicated caregiver and valued member” of its hospital and university communities and extended its thoughts to his family, loved ones and colleagues. The health system also asked that the family’s privacy be respected.

Evans’ death represents the loss of a physician whose professional life was devoted to the care of seriously ill children and to pediatric critical care. His work at UPMC Children’s Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh connected him with patients, families, fellow physicians, nurses, researchers and medical students throughout the region.
