Daten Briar Odom Obituary, BROOKINGS, S.D. — Daten Briar Odom, 19, of Brookings, South Dakota, has died following injuries sustained in a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 near Brookings early Thursday morning, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 5:56 a.m. Thursday near mile marker 140 on I-29. Authorities said the crash involved four vehicles and resulted in Odom suffering critical injuries before he later died from those injuries.
According to preliminary crash information, a 2018 Subaru Forester was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 29 when it collided with a 2011 GMC Sierra traveling northbound. The GMC Sierra was being driven by Odom.
Investigators said the initial impact caused the GMC Sierra to rotate before it struck a 2024 Ford F-350 that was also traveling northbound. A 2020 Chevrolet Trax later collided with the Subaru, which had come to a stop on the interstate following the first collision.
The driver of the Subaru, a 38-year-old woman from Toronto, South Dakota, was seriously injured in the crash. She was airlifted to a hospital in Sioux Falls with life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
The occupants of the Ford F-350 and Chevrolet Trax were not injured in the crash. Officials have not released additional details regarding what caused the Subaru to travel in the wrong direction on Interstate 29.
The crash remains under investigation as authorities continue working to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the deadly collision. Further information may be released as the investigation progresses.
