Duncan Fire Today — A devastating apartment fire in Duncan, British Columbia, has left two people dead, four others injured and approximately 50 residents displaced after a blaze broke out early Friday morning, August 21, at the Gala Vista apartment complex on Government Street.
Emergency crews were called to the building at approximately 2:30 a.m. after reports of flames and heavy smoke inside the apartment complex. Duncan Fire Chief Geoff Spriggs said the fire was reported in a second-floor apartment, prompting a large emergency response involving multiple agencies.
Firefighters from Duncan, North Cowichan and Cowichan Bay responded to the scene as smoke spread through parts of the building. Crews worked to contain the flames while assisting residents who were trapped inside smoke-filled units or forced to seek help from balconies.
Authorities have confirmed that two people died in the apartment fire. Four additional individuals were treated by paramedics and transported to hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical attention.
The fire also resulted in the displacement of about 50 residents who were forced to leave their homes. Emergency Management Cowichan began providing support to those affected as officials worked to address immediate housing and assistance needs following the blaze.
Authorities have classified the circumstances surrounding the fire as suspicious. The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Serious Crime Team is working with the Duncan Fire Department, B.C. Coroner Services and the Office of the Fire Commissioner as the investigation continues.
Officials have not released a confirmed cause of the fire or identified any person responsible. Investigators are continuing their work to determine what led to the blaze and the events surrounding the deaths and injuries.
