Elvin Hernandez Obituary: Fairfield, Connecticut – CTDOT Worker Killed After Being Struck on I-95

Elvin Hernandez Obituary, FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Elvin Hernandez, 60, a Connecticut Department of Transportation worker and 16-year veteran of CTDOT, died Friday, September 25, 2026, after being struck by a vehicle while working along Interstate 95 in Fairfield.

The fatal incident happened around 10:35 a.m. on I-95 southbound near Exit 20. Hernandez, who was based at the CTDOT Stratford garage, was part of a highway crew performing debris removal along the interstate. A CTDOT dump truck was parked on the right shoulder while the crew carried out the work.

According to investigators, Hernandez had stepped out of the truck to remove debris when a 2006 Buick Lucerne driven by 60-year-old Edward Michael Myers of Derby entered the grassy shoulder behind the truck and struck him. Emergency responders transported Hernandez to Bridgeport Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Connecticut State Police said Troop G had received multiple 911 calls before the crash concerning a vehicle reportedly traveling erratically near Exit 24 and drifting across lanes at a very low speed. Investigators later reported that Myers showed signs of impairment and admitted to drug use. Police also reported finding a substance in his pocket that Myers identified as freebase cocaine.

Myers was transported to St. Vincent’s Medical Center with minor injuries before being arrested. He was charged with Manslaughter in the Second Degree with a Motor Vehicle, Operating Under the Influence — Second Offense, Illegal Operation Without an Ignition Interlock Device, Possession of a Controlled Substance — Third Offense, and Failure to Maintain Proper Lane. He was held on a $750,000 bond at Bridgeport Correctional Center and was scheduled to appear in court on September 28, 2026. State Police said additional charges were anticipated.

The crash resulted in the closure of the southbound lanes of I-95 for several hours while the Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Squad investigated. Fairfield Police, Fairfield Fire, and Hernandez’s fellow CTDOT workers assisted with traffic control as investigators worked at the scene.

Hernandez had served with CTDOT since 2010, dedicating 16 years to maintaining Connecticut’s roads and helping keep motorists safe. Following his death, Governor Ned Lamont ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in recognition of Hernandez and his years of service.

Hernandez is remembered following his death as a longtime CTDOT employee whose work placed him alongside Connecticut’s highways in service to the traveling public. His passing has left his family, loved ones, coworkers at the Stratford garage, and the broader CTDOT community mourning the loss of a longtime member of their team. Condolences go out to everyone affected by his death as they remember his years of service to Connecticut.
