Ron Schlegel Obituary: Kitchener, Ontario – Schlegel Villages Founder Remembered for Transforming Seniors’ Care

Ron Schlegel Obituary, KITCHENER, Ontario — Ron Schlegel, founder of Schlegel Villages and a respected entrepreneur, innovator, and advocate for seniors, has died, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of leadership and commitment to improving the lives of older adults.

Schlegel passed away on Saturday, September 19, according to information shared by the Schlegel Villages community. His death has been deeply felt by residents, team members, researchers, community partners, and others connected to the organization he founded.

Often remembered as “the man who started it all,” Schlegel built more than a network of retirement and long-term care communities. His approach emphasized dignity, relationships, learning, and respect for older adults, principles that continue to shape the philosophy of Schlegel Villages.

Born and raised on a farm near Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Schlegel developed a strong work ethic early in life. He spent his youth baling straw and working to help fund his education, eventually earning advanced academic credentials, including a doctorate. His early experiences helped shape a career marked by entrepreneurship, innovation, and service.

Throughout his career, Schlegel pursued ventures in agriculture, urban development, and mental health care. His most enduring contribution came in seniors’ care. In 1991, he established the first Schlegel Village in Kitchener, beginning an organization that would grow into a recognized network of long-term care and retirement communities across Canada.

Colleagues and those who knew Schlegel often remembered his interest in people as much as his professional achievements. He was described as someone who enjoyed meeting residents, researchers, students, visitors, and frontline team members and learning about their experiences. His willingness to listen and understand different perspectives became an important part of his leadership.

Schlegel also supported research and academic partnerships focused on aging, dementia care, and seniors’ health. His contributions to the field were recognized nationally when he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, honouring his work in seniors’ care, research, and community development.

Even as his own health declined, Schlegel remained connected to the communities he helped create. His belief that older adults carried a lifetime of wisdom, deserved to be heard, and benefited from meaningful relationships remained central to the philosophy associated with his work. His passing marks the loss of a significant figure in Canadian seniors’ care, while the communities and principles he helped establish continue his legacy.
