Shirley Tunney Obituary, TUBA CITY, Ariz. — Shirley Tunney, a longtime Senior Financial Aid Counselor with the Navajo Nation Scholarship Office in Tuba City, has died. She peacefully passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2026, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Tunney dedicated more than 27 years to the Navajo Nation Scholarship Office, where she played an integral role in supporting students pursuing higher education. Her colleagues remembered her as someone who viewed education not simply as an opportunity, but as a sacred calling for the Navajo people.
According to her family, Tunney had a profound and unwavering faith, and her life was marked by love, grace and selfless service. Through her work, she devoted herself to helping students navigate the financial aid process and pursue their educational goals despite challenges they encountered along the way.
Her commitment extended beyond financial assistance. Tunney believed deeply in the potential of every student and hoped to see them become leaders and accomplished professionals in their chosen fields. She encouraged students to pursue careers that would allow them to return to their communities and contribute as doctors, educators, engineers, advocates and other professionals.
Her family said Tunney viewed every student as a child of God and advocated for their future with compassion and dedication. She took joy in supporting students throughout their academic journeys and celebrating their accomplishments and milestones.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Tunney brought warmth and leadership to the Navajo Scholarship Office. Her more than two decades of service left a lasting impression on colleagues, students and others who had the opportunity to work with her. Her quiet strength, faith and commitment to empowering students will remain part of the legacy she leaves behind.
Funeral services for Tunney are scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 21 Monave Street in Tuba City, Arizona. Viewing is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. DST, followed by services at 9:00 a.m. DST.
Interment will take place at Pillow Hill, Arizona, following the services, with a reception afterward at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Shirley Tunney will be remembered for her decades of service to students and her enduring dedication to education and community. Condolences are extended to her children, grandchildren, colleagues and all who mourn her passing.
