Terry Short Obituary, KNOTT COUNTY, Ky. — Terry Short, 55, of Kite, Kentucky, died Monday night, September 28, 2026, after being shot outside an apartment in the 13000 block of KY-7, according to Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard.
Troopers received a report of a shooting at approximately 9:39 p.m. and responded to the Kite community along with emergency medical personnel. Upon arrival, authorities found Short outside an apartment suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The Knott County Coroner’s Office pronounced Short dead at the scene. His death has left his family, friends, neighbors and others in the Kite community mourning the loss of a 55-year-old member of their community.
According to Kentucky State Police, the preliminary investigation indicates that an altercation occurred between Short and 44-year-old Robert Short, also of Kite. Authorities said a firearm was discharged during the altercation, striking Terry Short.
Robert Short was located at the scene and taken into custody. He was later transported to the Kentucky River Regional Jail, where he was lodged on one count of murder in connection with the fatal shooting.
The murder charge against Robert Short is an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. Kentucky State Police Detective Nathan Roark is leading the investigation.
An autopsy for Terry Short has been scheduled with the Kentucky Office of the State Medical Examiner in Frankfort. Authorities said additional information may be released as the investigation continues.
Terry Short’s death has brought grief to his family and the Kite community.
