Zer’Real B. Hinds Obituary, CAHOKIA HEIGHTS, Ill. — Zer’Real B. Hinds, 17, a student at Belleville West High School, has died following a fiery three-vehicle crash in Cahokia Heights, Illinois, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
According to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr., Zer’Real was identified as the young person who died following the collision. The crash occurred at approximately 8:20 a.m. at the intersection of Illinois Route 15 and Pocket Avenue and involved a van transporting students from Belleville West High School.
Authorities reported that the van was carrying six students and two adults when it became involved in the serious collision and subsequently caught fire. Several people were injured and transported to local hospitals for medical treatment.
Zer’Real’s death has brought grief to his family, friends, classmates, teachers, and others who knew him. At 17, he was still at an age when much of life remained ahead of him, including future experiences, friendships, milestones, and opportunities that his loved ones had hoped to see him experience.
The tragedy has also affected the wider Belleville West High School community. Belleville Township High School District 201 said its administration had made contact with the families of the students involved in the crash and expressed support for those affected. Emergency responders also reported that several people were ejected during the crash and that a baby was trapped in one of the vehicles.
