Brian W. Cross Obituary, BROOME, N.Y. — Brian W. Cross, 57, of Middleburgh, New York, was killed Tuesday morning, September 1, 2026, after the motorcycle he was riding struck a deer on State Route 145 in the Town of Broome, according to the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office.
The fatal motorcycle crash occurred at approximately 7:25 a.m., when Schoharie County Sheriff’s deputies responded to State Route 145 following reports of a motorcycle collision. Cross was traveling southbound on the roadway when a deer entered the path of the motorcycle.
According to the preliminary investigation, the motorcycle struck the deer in the southbound lane. The collision caused Cross to be thrown from the motorcycle, resulting in fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the crash, both lanes of State Route 145 were temporarily closed while members of the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office investigated the circumstances surrounding the collision. Deputies documented the scene, took photographs and collected evidence as part of the investigation.
The roadway was reopened to traffic at approximately 10:00 a.m. Authorities have not released additional information about the circumstances of the crash beyond the preliminary findings.
The Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing. At this time, authorities have indicated that the preliminary investigation points to a deer entering the roadway and being struck by the motorcycle.
Cross’s death is a reminder of the dangers that wildlife can pose to motorists, particularly motorcyclists, who have limited protection during a collision. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a Middleburgh resident whose life was cut short in the crash.
