Cornelio Christian Vasquez IV, 19, has been arrested in connection with a fatal Cass County crash that claimed the life of 49-year-old Ian Frye of Christine, North Dakota, according to jail records and authorities.
Cass County, N.D. — Cornelio Christian Vasquez IV, 19, was arrested in Grand Forks in connection with a fatal crash that killed Ian Frye of Christine on August 23. According to Grand Forks County Jail officials, Vasquez was taken into custody at approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday and is being held in connection with the deadly collision.
Vasquez faces multiple charges stemming from the crash, including homicide while fleeing a peace officer, a Class A felony; manslaughter; fleeing a peace officer in a vehicle resulting in risk of death or serious bodily injury; two counts of reckless endangerment; and reckless driving.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after midnight on August 23 near the intersection of Cass County Road 14 and County Road 81, south of Fargo. A state trooper reportedly attempted to stop Vasquez after observing the vehicle traveling approximately 109 mph in a 55-mph zone.
Authorities allege that Vasquez did not stop and instead fled from the traffic stop. Investigators said he continued traveling at a high rate of speed, turned off the vehicle’s headlights and ran a stop sign before crashing into a Honda Accord driven by Frye. Vasquez was allegedly driving a BMW at the time of the collision.
Frye was pronounced dead at the scene. Two juvenile passengers, ages 16 and 17, were also inside Vasquez’s vehicle and were injured in the crash. Both were transported to a Fargo hospital for treatment, with their injuries described as non-life-threatening. The North Dakota Highway Patrol said all three occupants of Vasquez’s vehicle were wearing seat belts.
The identities of the juvenile passengers have not been released in accordance with North Dakota law. Vasquez was formally charged in Cass County District Court on August 24 after investigators identified him as the driver involved in the fatal crash. He was not immediately taken into custody following the filing of charges, and an arrest warrant was issued August 25.
Authorities later located Vasquez in Grand Forks, where he was arrested Tuesday afternoon. He remains held at the Grand Forks County Jail as the case proceeds. The investigation into the alleged high-speed pursuit, failure to stop and fatal collision remains active, with additional court proceedings and information expected as the case moves forward. Ian Frye’s death has left his loved ones and the Christine community mourning the loss of a 49-year-old resident whose life was cut short in the crash.
