Kokotas suffered an acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest on March 28, 2024, while rehearsing for the television entertainment show J2US. He was subsequently rushed to G. Gennimatas Hospital in Athens, where he remained hospitalized for more than two years.
During his lengthy hospitalization, Kokotas was supported closely by his wife, Katerina, and other members of his family. His sister also spoke publicly about his condition in April 2026, describing the continued support he received during the difficult period.
Born in Athens in December 1968, Kokotas followed his father, renowned Greek laïko singer Stamatis Kokotas, into the music industry. Although he entered a family tradition of music, Dimitris established his own identity and career and became recognized for his contributions to Greece’s music scene.

Away from the stage, Kokotas was a devoted husband and father. He married Katerina, whom he met while working in a nightclub, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Rihanna, in 2011. His family remained close to him throughout his prolonged illness and hospitalization.
