CALEB EISWORTH Obituary, BATON ROUGE, La. — Sgt. Caleb Eisworth, a 23-year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Department, has died after suffering severe injuries when he was struck and dragged by a pickup truck while riding his marked police motorcycle.
According to police, the incident involved Gad Black, 41, who allegedly intentionally rammed Eisworth with a Ford F-150. The collision occurred on Joor Road in Baton Rouge, where Eisworth was riding his police motorcycle at the time of the incident.
Authorities said the impact threw Eisworth from his motorcycle and left him trapped beneath the truck. He was then dragged for more than 500 feet along the roadway before the vehicle stopped.
Eisworth suffered multiple serious injuries in the crash, including two broken legs and a broken arm. His injuries ultimately resulted in both of his legs being amputated above the knee as he underwent extensive medical treatment.
The veteran officer remained hospitalized and fought for his life for approximately seven weeks following the incident. Despite efforts to save him, Eisworth eventually succumbed to his injuries, according to the information provided.
Police said Black later posted a statement on Facebook referencing the incident, writing, “Just stretched one on Joor Rd.” Authorities also said Black admitted to targeting Eisworth because of what he described as a “deep-rooted hatred for law enforcement.”
Eisworth’s death marks the loss of a longtime member of the Baton Rouge Police Department who dedicated 23 years to law enforcement service. His death has brought renewed attention to the dangers faced by police officers while carrying out their duties.
