Matt Dawson Obituary, TAJIKISTAN — Matt Dawson, an extreme athlete and philanthropist known for his extraordinary endurance achievements and charitable work, died on Aug. 15 after suffering a tragic accident during a mountaineering expedition in Tajikistan.
Dawson was attempting to summit Ismoil Somoni Peak, one of the highest mountains in Tajikistan, when the accident occurred. His family announced his death in an Instagram post shared Sept. 1, saying that Dawson had “made his final climb” while pursuing the summit.
Born in 1978, Dawson spent 15 years working in finance before leaving the profession following the deaths of his mother and girlfriend. He subsequently devoted himself to extreme sports and adventure, taking part in mountain-climbing expeditions, polar and desert journeys, and oceanic rowing challenges around the world.
According to information published on his website, Dawson achieved nine world records during his athletic career. Among his most recent accomplishments was a Guinness World Record for the fastest crossing of the Mojave Desert on foot, which he achieved in May 2024.
Dawson also dedicated significant attention to philanthropy. In 2018, he founded Dawson’s Peak Foundation, a charity that organizes adventure projects around the world alongside sponsored athletes, with the goal of inspiring individuals to see themselves represented in the world of athletic achievement.
Earlier in 2026, Dawson began a three-peak challenge involving attempts to summit Ismoil Somoni Peak, Ozodi Peak and Manaslu while raising money for the ALS Network. His fundraising efforts were inspired in part by his friend, Broadway star Aaron Lazar, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2022.
The ALS Network paid tribute to Dawson on Aug. 24, describing itself as heartbroken by the death of its friend and supporter. The organization praised his commitment, generosity and determination and expressed condolences to his family, loved ones, friends and fellow adventurers.
Dawson was also remembered by longtime friend and actor AJ Buckley, who said they had met more than two decades ago and quickly became close friends. Buckley recalled Dawson as someone who was consistently present for important moments in the lives of those he cared about. His legacy will remain closely connected to his adventurous spirit, athletic achievements and efforts to support the ALS community.
