Born February 27, 1942, in Wisbech, England, Bailey became one of English football’s respected midfielders during a professional career that spanned two decades. His playing career included spells with Charlton Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers and the Minnesota Kicks in the NASL.
Bailey began his professional career with Charlton Athletic in 1958 and remained with the club until 1966. His consistency, work rate and determination earned him a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers that year, beginning the chapter of his career for which he became most closely associated with the club.
Bailey spent 11 seasons at Wolves from 1966 to 1977, establishing himself as a dependable presence in midfield and serving as captain. He was part of the club’s teams during its resurgence in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His performances also brought international recognition, and he made two appearances for England in 1964.
In 1977, Bailey moved to North America to join the Minnesota Kicks of the North American Soccer League. Wearing the No. 4 shirt, he appeared in 14 outdoor matches during the season, playing 1,187 minutes and recording two assists. He also featured in two indoor matches, scoring one goal and contributing five points overall.
Bailey returned to the Minnesota Kicks for the 1978 outdoor campaign, making four appearances and playing 390 minutes. Although his time in the NASL was relatively brief, his experience and professionalism added veteran leadership during a period when the league was expanding and attracting established international players.
After his playing career, Bailey remained connected to football through coaching and community involvement. His long association with Wolverhampton Wanderers made him a respected and remembered figure among the club’s supporters, while his time with the Minnesota Kicks became part of the history of the NASL’s formative years.
