Preston Korytkowski Obituary, CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. — Preston Korytkowski, 22, of Rockford, Michigan, died after his vehicle struck a disabled tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 in Caroline County, Virginia, early Saturday, Aug. 15. Virginia State Police said the crash occurred at approximately 3:40 a.m.
According to investigators, the tractor-trailer had become disabled and was pulled onto the right shoulder of I-95. Shortly after it was parked, Korytkowski’s 2011 Honda CR-V struck the rear of the tractor-trailer. Police said the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
Korytkowski suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Virginia State Police. Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the collision.
Korytkowski was known in the hockey community as a member and captain of Michigan State University’s ACHA Men’s Division II hockey program. His death prompted an outpouring of grief from teammates, friends and members of the Michigan State hockey community.
The hockey program shared a statement mourning the loss of its captain and teammate, saying, “Posting this with a heavy heart. Our teammate, friend and Captain Preston sadly passed away last evening.” The statement reflected the loss felt by those who knew him through the program.
Korytkowski also had ties to the Rockford hockey community and was remembered as a former Rockford Ram and MSU Spartan hockey player. A tribute shared by members of that community recalled his competitive presence during games against Catholic Central and asked others to keep his family in their prayers.
His death has left teammates, coaches, friends and members of the hockey community mourning the loss of a 22-year-old athlete and team leader. Those remembering Korytkowski have shared messages of sympathy and remembrance as his family and loved ones grieve.
